The Fisheries Department’s Habitat staff have begun to repair the approximately 15 miles of riparian fences that were damaged by the Nena Springs Fire. Riparian fences play a critical roll for the fisheries habitat department by keeping livestock out of the creek and its surrounding riparian area. By protecting the riparian area plants along the creek are able to grow to full maturity allowing them to keep stream banks stable, create shade, reduce the amount of sediment entering the creek and create habitat for aquatic insects. The Fisheries Habitat Program currently maintains approximately 67 miles of riparian fences on the reservation in order to protect and enhance fish habitat and water resources.
