The Cavender Wetland and Riparian Improvement Project was implemented by tribal partner, the Monument Soil & Water Conservation District and constructed during the summer of 2016. This project is located near the town of Monument, OR on the North Fork John Day River. The project’s main objective was protecting and enhancing a seasonal 9.7-acre wetland, not commonly found in eastern Oregon. Wetland protection was completed with installation of large wood structures and levee setbacks. The area was enhanced through the construction of high water inlet and outlet channels connected to the mainstem North Fork John Day. The project area will be reseeded and replanted with native plants in the fall of 2016.
Partners on this project include: Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Bonneville Power Administration, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
