In 2012, fish habitat surveys identified the Indian Creek Culvert at the S-501 road crossing as a partial fish passage barrier. The Deschutes River Restoration Program, in conjunction with the NRCS completed design work in 2014 and implemented the project in summer of 2015. The main objective of the project was to remove the culvert causing fish migration issues. In addition to removing the culvert, the project entailed installing 5 in-stream fish habitat structures, decommissioning approximately 1,500 feet of streamside road and revegetating stream banks with native grasses and forbes. The project was funded through an NRCS EQUIP grant and completed by Dry Canyon Construction & Excavation LLC.
